Faith on Your Own Time

Finding good Bible Study resources can be difficult. Most name-brand Bible Study series on the market are heavily marketed to evangelical audiences. Many push heavy-handed messages about endtimes theology and prosperity gospel rather than a deeper understanding of the Bible in context. To help with understanding, we have made some of our own materials based on the best biblical and theological scholarship we can find. We have also used several excellent books from New Testament scholars Scot McKnight and Amy-Jill Levine. Please contact us if you would like any additional information.

These are the studies that we have done and links to access the materials.

The Book of Galatians

We will study the pivotal book of Galatians. There is so much more than just the conflict that Paul was trying to solve in the Galatian churches. He had to understand the cultural divides between Jewish and Gentile converts. We will use the second half of James and Galatians: Living Faithfully with Wisdom and Liberation (New Testament Everyday Bible Studies).

Songs of Renewal

We had a wonderful time learning about the history and stories behind the great hymns of the faith using “Songs for Renewal” by Janet Lindeblad Janzen with Richard Foster. The book is out of print, but we have the rights to copy it. Contact us if you would like a copy sent to you.

The Creeds and Confessions of the Presbyterian Church

We did a deep dive into the Creeds and Confessions of the Presbyterian Church. We learned about the changing understanding of the reformed faith through the centuries. It was very enlightening to see the historical basis for much of what we believe as modern Christians. You can download our study guide free: Creeds and Confessions

Second Corinthians

With the upcoming presidential election and the inevitable changes, we wanted to take stock of where we stood as a church and how the church manages change. We developed our own 11-week study guide of Second Corinthians. We learned that the difficulties Paul faced strengthened his bounds with the Corinthian people. Acts: Participating Together in God’s Mission

We did a year-long study on Acts using Scot McKnight’s Acts: Participating Together in God’s Mission (New Testament Everyday Bible Study Series). We learned about the complexities of doing “real church” in these studies. People often focus on the ecstasy of the Holy Spirit in the first few chapters while ignoring the lessons about hardship, negotiation, and conflict in real churches. This study helped us understand where the church is today much better. Bulk BooksAmazon.

Sermon on the Mount Leader Guide: A Beginner's Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven

We did a 40-week study using Amy-Jill Levine’s Sermon on the Mount Leader Guide: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven. Meant as a daily reader, we adapted it to a weekly bible study. We learned about the richness of Jewish interpretations of Jesus’s words in Matthew 5-7 in the Sermon on the Mount. It is a low-cost guide that we found to be very enriching. AbdingnonAmazon.
